Previously a sub-division of old Palamu district of Jharkhand state, Latehar was created as a district on April 4, 2001. It is situated between 84 degrees and 31 minutes east latitude and 23 degrees and 44.4 seconds north latitude. Located on the north-west corner of Jharkhand, it is surrounded by Ranchi, Lohardaga, Gumla, Palamu and Chatra districts apart from Chhattisgarh state.

Covering an area of 5,044 sq km, Palamu district is situated between 230 50'and 240 8' north latitude and 830 55' and 840 30' east longitude. The district is bounded on the north by river Son, on the east by districts of Chatra and Hazaribagh, while Latehar district and Garhwa district flank Palamu on the south and west, respectively.
