Breaking the Standstill, United for Progress

At Sukri village, the construction of an intake well once came to a grinding halt, posing a serious setback to local development and promised irrigation. While everyone knew the cause, no one dared act. The looming threat from Maoists, who demanded a share of the project, left the community paralyzed, risking not just loss of wages but also the dream of water security.

Yet, with monsoon approaching and the riverbank threatening to erode the unfinished structure, the stakes could not have been higher. What followed was a testament to the power of unity and persistence. Guided by project staff, the villagers rallied together, holding firm discussions, patient negotiations and tireless counselling sessions. Their combined resolve and goodwill convinced the Maoist group, in turn allowing work to resume.

Thanks to this extraordinary coordination, the intake well was completed just in time, saving the investment and opening new doors for irrigation and livelihoods. Villagers now look back on this episode with pride—knowing that it was their collective spirit, partnership with the NGO team and shared responsibility that turned a crisis into an achievement.

Sukri’s story stands as a shining example of how adversity can be overcome when a community works as one, demonstrating that progress, even in difficult circumstances, is possible when confidence and cooperation lead the way.
