Village Awakens to Education

In the Maoist-affected village of Kaima, under Nawagarh Panchayat of Latehar Block, a remarkable transformation is unfolding. What was once one of the most backward schools in the district, plagued by low enrolment and absenteeism, today stands as a symbol of community awakening and educational revival.

Until a few years ago, parents hesitated to send their children to school, citing poor teaching quality, inactive School Management Committees (SMCs), and non-functional Bal Sansads. Education had lost its meaning in this tribal pocket, home to about 300 residents, all belonging to Scheduled Tribes.

The turning point came when the VEDIC Society, with support from UNICEF, began its intervention across 175 schools in Latehar and Balumath. The team introduced awareness sessions on the Right to Education (RTE) Act, roles of SMCs, Bal Sansads, and parental engagement. Regular visits by VEDIC Society representatives encouraged participation and accountability within the community.

The result has been astonishing. Attendance has surged, SMC members now monitor midday meals, teacher attendance, and school operations, while Bal Sansads meet monthly to voice children’s needs and ideas. Children practise handwashing regularly, and teachers creatively use teaching-learning materials in classrooms.

Today, Kaima Middle School is not just a centre of learning but also of hope — proof that when a community wakes up to the power of education, change is unstoppable.
